One of the paintings by Kazimir Malevich, painted by him in 1932, is called “Landscape with Five Houses” and is painted in oil in an abstract genre.

The analysis of such works is always controversial and, as a result, causes a lot of disagreement, but we still try to give the elements of this picture a certain justification.

“Landscape with five houses” is perhaps a work by which the author seeks to draw the attention of the viewer to the harmonious coexistence of man with nature, which in no case should be lost. It can be assumed that five buildings without doors and windows, standing along a straight horizon, should not cause gloomy associations, but only abstractly show the result of human activity.

They stand right at the junction between dark blue, turning into blue, sky and brick red, acquiring yellow, and then pinkish-white shades of the earth (most likely, this is a field of wheat or rye). A cloudless sky is the infinity and immensity of the universe, and the earth contrasting the sky is reality and being.

In general, for the artist in 1932 begins a special period in life. After he received the position of head of the Experimental Laboratory at the Russian Museum, some of his works were included in museum displays. Then, he wrote the fourth, he was the last, of the Black Square options that he had prepared for the exhibition “Artists of the RSFSR for XV Years”. This version of the square is today in the Hermitage. And his next work, begun in the same, but still unfinished, was a picture of Sotsgorod. In these last years of the artist, abstract images have already been replaced by realistic portraits. And in 1933 he started cancer, from which he died in 1935.

Like many other paintings by Malevich, “Landscape with Five Houses” is a very simple at first glance work and very controversial. But a latent idea, its excellent embodiment in harmoniously combined colors and shapes makes it a very valuable exhibit of world culture.
