Sergey Ivanov was born in 1864, and even in childhood showed a penchant for drawing. However, his father, confident that a decent person could not be fed with painting, sent him to study as an engineer, seeing this as a kind of compromise - in his opinion, it was necessary to draw there and there, but the engineer should still be more honorable and more profitable.

After studying at the Institute that was unpleasant for him for three years, Seryozha, then a boy of 14 years old, left him and went to the Moscow School of Painting, where he showed himself to be a diligent student and a talented artist. His favorite genre remained plot scenes. Inexplicably attracted to his village life, the past of Russia, the problems of social inequality, which, with the help of critical realism, he reflected in his paintings as accurately as possible.

"Sagittarius" - one of his historical paintings, painted, as always, in broad strokes, without a thousand details per square centimeter, but lively, understandable and consistent with the truth. On it is a Streltsy regiment returning from a campaign. The trumpeter trumpets, the sabers sway on the bandages, a square flag flutters (he had his own specially developed one for each streltsy regiment), horseback riders ride, and the archers' faces are tired, solemn and a little formidable.

Most likely they come back with a victory. And people around live their own lives. A ringed dog does not pay much attention to a crowd of people in red uniforms, without shame turning their tail to them, a blind old man collects alms, the church is likely to be serving, trade continues in a small shop.

No one intends to interrupt in order to meet or at least rejoice at the arrival of the archers, but all because they are the same life in everyday life. Go on patrol. Sometimes they go to war.

Sometimes it’s their business, but it’s necessary to live. There is a Streltsy regiment in the city, but it seems that in the desert.
